I was once a supporter of your cause until I observed the behavior of some of your people at a 4th of July parade with my children. An HUMC ambulance was in the parade and as they passed, a group of HFD members and supporters began shouting obscenities at the crew in the HUMC ambulance, and also calling them scabs. This was done in front of a whole bunch of kids. Disgusting behavior at a family oriented parade in honor of this countries birthday. Hate to say it guys, but its time to put down the signs and move on, I have. I wish HUMC the best of luck as they now have my support.

Save Lives Save Emt's:
Really!Wow! Would like to know which town parade was in. Don't agree with that behavior, but does'nt it interest you in the least WHY HUMC has a AMBULANCE in a town parade? It's a PRIVATE BUSINESS! As a supporter of the cause, sorry for any bad behavior, it's not indicative of all.

Angry Taxpayer:
I find this allegation hard to believe. I'm also curious as well as to why the hospital has an ambulance in a municipal parade. But seriously, a perceived incident of bad behavior is certainly grounds to support a rotten deal brought about by criminals. Yup. Works for me...

Life Long Resident:
I also find this hard to believe BUT don't you think that if this really happened as Angry Taxpayer says why were they in the parade? That is something that you should be asking and also why haven't they attended any council to answer any questions.BUT they sure went and spoke to Westwood about thier plans!Hope you don't need EMS someday and wonder why they didn't come.

Another lifelong resident:
As an ardent supporter of the FD EMTs, I can tell you that the behavior above is what has hurt them the most. The fire union has done nothing but embarrass themselves and really hurt the cause of these 8 men. If this had been handled professionally (on all sides) maybe negotiations could have happened. The union has done nothing but hurt these guys and its a true shame as to whats happening to them. I know some personally and they are true gentlemen. If the fire administration and union had handled the EMS porperly for the past years, this never would have happened.

Angry Taxpayer:
I think that's completely inaccurate. The fire administration had an outstanding plan for how to provide EMS for this city, it's the politicians who didn't want to hear it! The union and the supporters came into this playing nice, and now that time has passed. Nobody from the city administration can pass the buck either, they were the ones stalling the negotiations.

Save Lives Save Emt's:
This started in Feb 08. City blindsides FD and Emt's, March-unions ask to talk : city-yawns!! April - unions ask to talk :city-yawns!! May-unions still asking to meet : city-yawns!! June, ah well you get the idea!! come on, really, these guys are getting fired, when do you start getting annoyed, when it's August 30th?! Too late! The city hasn't been too cooperative with unions, so what do you expect?? You tell me!!

Supporting the HFD EMS:
First, I do not believe that the firefighters that acted in this manner were from HFD but from another community. They were probably thinking that it was not a bad thing. Don't get me wrong, if this was their performance, then they were wrong. I was at this parade and as a supporter of the HFD EMS,I, in silent protest, just turned my back to the HUMC ambulance. Right or wrong, that was my right to show my opinion about them.

mparisi says: I'm wondering about the following: What obligation does the city have if any to offer a ambulance services to its community? and where does that liability end and begin by outsourcing to the hospital? What happens when the person(s) in need want to go to another hospital other than HUMED? Will the New plan simply default every case to HUMED? Will the New plan be verifying insurance at the time of the call, in transit, or anytime before the person(s) enter the ER? What about the special cases such as the transportation of prisoners? How will that be handled.

SaveLivesSaveEmt's!:
Good questions, all of them..show up July 8th,7PM and ask the CM, he's sure to have ALL the answers. But here's something else to ponder..maybe a copy of agreement AND how HUMC/Vanguard will operate and charge and transport should be mailed to each and every household in city AND then everyone will know. This should be done BEFORE they fire city FD EMT's just in case any more questions need clarification and if citizens really will like this "equal or better service". They already know what they get with FD EMT's now, don't know what your gonna get after their gone. Or they can just drop this deal and figure out another way to save so called $600 grand.

Any paid service is better than a volunteer service. The only tragedy here is that volunteers are still putting people's lives in danger every night in Hackensack. If everyone put their energy into eliminating volunteer EMS in the state, this profession would take a huge step forward. We would all get paid more, have better benefits and probably have a pension system that mirrors that of police and fire. As long as there are people are willing to do this for free (for whatever reason, we may never know) we will be treated like crap.

A volunteer E.M.T.:
Is this because a paid employee's EMT course and exam is more extensive than a volunteer's?? The last I checked, the training and certification process is IDENTICAL. Payment for services, however, is different. Your ignorant comment is not helping save the 8 civilian EMT's jobs. They are being replaced with Medical Center/Vanguard employees, not the volunteer ambulance corps. Wise up. Maybe you should go to the "other" blog if you have inflammatory comments.

micp 2:
Career Professional EMS vs. Volunteer EMS, here it is very simple, yes same exam, same class..
Paterson police vs. Maywood Police, yes same exam, same
class..
Joe's Amoco vs. Mercedes Dealer, for repairs on a CLK 430, mechanic's attend same class, same exam Get the Point !! Experiance, knowledge, and practiced daily.. Not knocking anybody but clarifing the comments above...

A volunteer E.M.T.:
Your clarification is enlightening... But for the record, there are many new E.M.T.'s that volunteer.. But many experienced. A JCMC EMS supervisor, a handful of guys with 10+ years service, police officers, military veterans, fire fighters (out of town volunteer, of course) and others. Would love to hear of specific incidents where the supposed "MICP" saw a volunteer E.M.T. "putting lives in danger every night." B.S. and more B.S.

As one of the first HFD EMT's in 1981, I can only say that these men are dedicated, and highly professional. With their response time, knowledge of the city, and experience, these would be the PROFESSIONALS that I would want to help me. Stay the course, it ain't over, and YOU WILL WIN. STAY SAFE BROTHERS.

As a city resident for the last 15yrs, I am absolutely horrified at the mayor and council planning to fire 8 HFD EMT's. Being a police officer, prior HPD, now BCPD, I only know first hand how amazingly dedicated and highly trained these 8 men are. I watched them do there magic many times, saving peoples lives. Their compassion never fails to amaze me, whether it's a homeless person or a car crash victim. I can honestly say, HFD/EMS are the best in Bergen County. It's so easy for politicians to make ignorant choices when most really don't know what it's like to do a really hard day's work like our HFD/EMS. HUMC-RENT-A-BLS is the biggest mistake the city can make, you have no clue what kind of money the city will have to pay in lawsuits for lack of care, ending in death! We the residents voted for you and this is how much you regard our safety, getting rid of our HFDEMS/BLS! KEEP HFD/EMS it not only effects the residents of Hackensack, but everyone else who passes through our city daily.....

SACRIFICE FOR PROFIT

I work as a paid EMT for a private service. My company retains 911 contracts for 10 towns yet house in only 4 locations, extending response times. We are not familiar with the areas and must locate our patient by GPS and maps (which are only useful if you know where you are at the moment you get called) if the destination is even listed. We respond blind, getting directions from dispatchers who call the patients for them, delaying care. We hire from outside the area; many reside outside a 20 mile radius to the town serviced. I have worked for this company approximately 5 years and still am only positive of the main roads and frequent flyers. If not for the GPS in our ambulance I'm sure I would be having greater difficulties getting to the hospital. Even with the GPS system we still get turned around and must "find" the main road before the GPS can give directions. Many of these directions are still incorrect. One must also remember that a private service must also generate an internal profit; this means making sacrifices. One of the main sacrifices made by private services is experience. Private services canvas EMT classes for new hires because they "come cheap" due to NO EXPERIENCE. I have been in this field for 16 years and find that many times I am training my 20 y/o partner from the drivers seat. Many do not drive due to insurance stipulations, and have approximately 1 month experience; the patient suffers SACRIFICES ARE MADE FOR PROFIT.

If these guys are so professional, how come some of them are wearing shorts while on the job? If memory serves, that is an OSHA violation.

Save Lives,Save EMT's!:
Really? The EMT's do not wear shorts and F/F's are allowed to during warm weather months just to curb your "curiosity"!

Curious:
Yeah, I guess the guys seen at HUMC ER wearing shorts while getting in and out of the HFD ambulance is an illusion.

exwife:
Being an immediate family member of one of the eight, I know for a fact that they don't wear shorts. Perhaps you saw a family member of the patient or someone else getting out of the ambulance but you most certainly did not see them in shorts. I personally laundered the uniforms for many years and they don't consist of shorts. Furthermore, the uniforms they wear must be made of Nomex and are NOT cheap...

also curious:
Funny, I saw one of the emts getting off the truck with a patient on Tuesday and he was wearing shorts. Saw the same emt wearing pants yesterday.....Have seen this particular emt wearing shorts and a polo shirt many, many times......I took a picture of him on Tuesday as well.

Not Curious:
Firefighter EMT's fill in on the ambulances occasionally (example vacations) and they are permitted to wear shorts. PS I think there are more important things to worry about in life, than some ones work attire. I wish I had your life, maybe not.

Angry Taxpayer:
EXACTLY!!! WHO CARES! Shorts are an accepted part of the uniform, as approved by OSHA and the NFPA. It's obvious you are just being malicious, or you're jealous of these guys for their reputation and the support they get from their brothers. Nuff' said.

FF/EMT:
Shorts ARE NOT OSHA approved to be worn while working on an ambulance. End of story!!!

If a FF is working on an ambulance, PANTS must be worn and not shorts.

BUt who does care?

the city govt. screwed these guys and nothing is gonna change it.

It is a very sad commentary for the residents of the City of Hackensack, that the City Government is willing to eliminate an efficient, professional Basic Life Support ambulance system (with highly experienced and excellently trained staff), replacing it with a commercial entity with an unknown response time record, and EMT-B's of lesser experience level (some with accreditation so new the ink is still wet...) for the sake of what the press reports is political expediency.
I work with all types of basic level EMS.
The professionalism and compassion of HFD-EMS is well-known to be of the highest caliber, and an asset to the City.
Shame on you.

Great day on the news to save EMS 8. I believe that Channel 12 and 9 did an excellent job. The one speaker on channel 12 news has no idea what she is talking about. I don't even think she is a taxpayer. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING BEFORE YOU SPEAK.

I think in light of the courage it took to put that ad in the paper, the supporters of this effort should make it a point to have a meal at Cubby's! I know I am, and not just because the food is good! They took a big chance, especially given the administration's penchant for retaliation.....

Calling all Hackensack Residents,

COUNCIL MEETING IS TONIGHT, MONDAY JUNE 2 @ 7pm

Mayor Meneses wants to see even more residents attend to the Council Meetings to tell him that WE WANT TO KEEP OUR FIRE-BASED EMS!! We should be expanding our FIRE-BASED EMS, not disbanding. We the residents of this Great City need to send this message to Mayor Meneses, the City Manager and the Council as well as voice our displeasure on their poorly made decisions, ie; The disbanding of our Fire Dept EMS, the purchasing of 91 Anderson Street for $2.5 million and the $100,000.00+ needed for renovations during a Budget Crisis, the Developer's Agreement the City has entered with HUMC that the Mayor and Council have no details about, or the whereabouts of a $1 million donation/payment received from HUMC that was left out of the signed agreement, and the list goes on...

We the residents and taxpayers are the ones footing the bills for these decisions. We are the only ones that can make the difference in decisions that are made, but are NOT in the best interest of the Residents, OUR interest. The time has come for us to take a stand!!

ALL RESIDENTS NEED TO UNITE, WE HAVE A VOICE AND OUR VOICE NEEDS TO BE HEARD!!!

Decisions on Public Safety, OUR SAFETY, should be voted on by Residents and Taxpayers. We are the ones that are going to be affected by these poorly made decisions for years to come, long after this administration is GONE.

Let's get this RIGHT!!!
